Worldwide Cane Shortage Hits Artisan Bakers
Sad news for artisan bakers! Our cane proving baskets which give the traditional characteristic swirl pattern to bread, a hallmark of artisan bread are made from birch wood, an FSC certified wood (which means it is sustainably harvested). Unfortunately, due to increased global demand, the supply has not been able to keep up, which has resulted in a worldwide shortage of birch wood, as well as a sudden price increase.
What this means is that supplies of our beautiful cane proving baskets may be about to run dry. We of course will continue in our quest to source the most environmentally sustainable and affordable products for as long as they are available, but if you’ve been dithering about whether or not to buy one, now is the time!
